I’m Terrified of Jellyfish

Everything in the ocean baffles my mind. The creatures that live underwater look so bizarre and I really don’t understand how they are living things. But I must say that jellyfish top the list of the most bizarre things in the ocean. They have no bones, no brains, they come in so many sizes, and they all have varying degrees of stings. During my time in Australia, I developed a fear of jellyfish. Australia is home to the kinds of jellyfish that can kill you, so I had reason to be scared. Continue reading


New Year’s Eve Down Under

I live in Canada.  In most parts of Canada, our winters are cold and snowy, and our winter takes place at the same time as one of the biggest party nights of the year – New Year’s Eve.  In most Canadian cities, New Year’s Eve celebrations take place outside, no matter what the temperature is.  They lure you to the festivities with musicians and fireworks, and a big enough crowd that you can all huddle together and feed off each other’s body heat to survive the night.   Continue reading

Spotting Dingoes on Fraser Island

Fraser Island is the largest sand island in the world.  It has beautiful beaches, rainforests, and dingos and is a popular spot for tourists to visit.  Travelling in early September meant taking advantage of the slow tourist season.  With little confidence in our abilities to drive a 4 x 4 vehicle across the island, my friend and I decided to take a guided tour on the island.  We were on a limited time frame and wanted to pack in as much as possible and the Fraser Explorer tour took us on a two-day trip around the island.  We saw some beautiful few freshwater lakes, Eli Creek, colourful sand dunes and we had an overnight stay at Eurong Beach Resort.  The bus broke down on the way to the ferry in the morning, which is always an exciting way to start the day.  But, our tour guide was quick to fix it.
